The situation
Fabricate and install an artist's interactive sculpture on a working museum campus, and hold a standing, unpaid owner's representative seat across the campus's other art installations.
Three parties on every installation, the artist, the fabricator and the museum's own facilities department, with no shared chain of command, on a campus where a mistake cannot be redone quietly.
One person with standing on schedule and safety calls whom none of the three budgets paid, because a fee from any of them would have ended the authority.
Build the sculpture at a normal rate and treat the choreography around it as the real deliverable; hold the standing seat unpaid on purpose and never try to turn it into a fee.
Magic Carpet/Home installed in June 2017 and featured in CODAworx's Interactive Art issue that August; standing review of bids and change orders on roughly fifteen other campus installations, held to the end of the term.
